Sometimes it can be hard to achieve your potential in school, where you're always in a big class and nothing's tailored towards your needs and interests. Focused, individual attention from a trained mentor could make a huge difference in what you achieve by the end of the year.
West Auckland Academic Mentoring (WAAM) pairs high school students with knowledgable volunteer mentors, who can help you with particular school subjects, while also providing guidance in goal setting, study skills, and keeping yourself motivated throughout the year.
How does it work?
At each session, you'll be paired with a mentor who can help you with your chosen subject (if you can attend regularly, we'll try to put you with the same mentor each time). For the next ninety minutes, they'll help you with setting goals, mastering the subject matter, and developing study skills which you can apply to your other classes. Because you'll be working one-on-one, the entire session can be tailored exactly to your own needs.
What are the benefits?
- Improve your grades
- Get help with the specific subjects you're struggling with
- Learn valuable learning skills that will help you with other subjects
- Get advice on goal setting, motivation, subject choice, and careers
What do I need to do?
Sign up using the button below and we'll match you with a mentor for the next session. You can also drop in on our next session to try it out, although we can't guarantee there will be a mentor available for you immediately.
Mentoring sessions run on Wednesday and Thursday evenings during term time. Please contact us to confirm the time and location if you would like to drop in.
You could wait until exam time to start looking for extra help, but research shows that you'll get much better results if you get one-on-one assistance all year, even if it's only once a week. We'll continue matching new students with mentors throughout the year, so long as we have enough volunteers.
