We are seeking volunteers to mentor West Auckland secondary school students in academic subjects. You'll provide one-on-one help with homework, exams, goal setting, study skills, and motivation, with no cost to the student. You'll also receive ongoing training and support to help you develop your own skills and provide the best possible support to your student.
Why be a mentor?
- Combat educational inequality by offering academic help to students who can't pay lots of money for it.
- Pass on your knowledge about something you're good at.
- Supplement busy teachers' efforts by giving one of their students focused support.
- One-on-one support can make a huge difference in students' learning.
- Revisit the basics to help you master a subject you're still learning about.
- Get teaching, tutoring, or youth work experience.
- You'll attend training sessions that will make you a better mentor.
- Help a student see what's so great about the subjects you're interested in.
- Mentoring only requires a couple of hours a week, so it can fit into your busy schedule.
- Give a student the skills they need to succeed in the future – not just in the subject you're helping them with.
What's involved?
Mentoring sessions are held on Wednesday evenings, 6:30-8:30pm, at the Zeal youth centre in Henderson.
You'll work with a student from 6:30-8pm, helping them set goals and understand what they're working on in class.
After the students have left, you'll participate in a half-hour training session. In this session we'll discuss what's working and help each other find solutions to any issues, as well as sharing evidence-based best practices for effective mentoring.

- Are knowledgable about one or more common school subjects, especially English, maths, and the sciences.
- Can commit to attending mentoring sessions every week during the school term (if you can't make this commitment, you be able to attend as a 'floating' mentor, helping with any students who drop in unexpectedly or filling in for regular mentors who can't attend).
- Have finished high school, or are in year twelve or above.
- We'd particularly like to have some mentors from the West Auckland area, but this is not required.
